From the reviews
The owner, Suzette, is a master teacher and a real healer. She will look at your body and tell you where your weakness are and how to fix them. Listen to what she says because she's always right and you will age better and look better! She has really helped me get results.
Suzette & Shelter Island Pilates have helped me in so many ways. Throughout Covid-19, Suzette has been offering Zoom classes 3-4 X per week. She started them immediately once the pandemic hit and they have been a lifeline for the community and a chance for us to connect.
I think Suzette is the best in the business. She puts 120% of her energy into every class she teaches, and her technique is impeccable. Her foundation in dance provides a discipline and attention to form that is both helpful and inspiring.
Suzette is the best teacher I've ever encountered. Her focus is on correct alignment and working correctly to prevent injury and get better results. She creates a supportive environment for everyone to push to their own personal edge to work safely.
Your first barre class at Shelter Island Pilates
New to barre? Almost everyone is their first time, and a good studio expects beginners to walk in the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: barre blends small isometric holds and tiny pulses at a ballet barre with light weights and mat work — it's low-impact and joint-friendly, but it works muscles you didn't know you had, so a little shaking in your legs is the point, not a problem. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: fitted leggings and a top you can move in — nothing baggy, so the instructor can see your form. Grip socks: most barre studios require grip socks — bring a pair or check whether they sell them at the front desk; the grippy soles keep you steady during the pulses. What to bring: water and a small towel. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign in and meet your instructor. It clicks fast — most people say their third class feels completely different from their first.
