“Even now, 6 years and ~950 classes later, I still have to take multiple breaks each class—the movements are small, the weights are light, but the work is very real.”

From the reviews
I started coming to City Barre in January 2020 after a stress fracture made running impossible. I needed a low impact workout that was still challenging, and I found it.
I first went to a few classes at City Barre with work friends a couple of years ago. I remember thinking how hard the classes were but how nice the instructors were and how fun they made the workouts. Fast forward three or so years, I am a few months post-knee surgery and pregnant with my second child.
I started going to City Barre about a year and a half ago due to a recommendation from physical therapy. I have some lower back issues and have found that barre exercises help manage the situation.
I am a 78 year old woman, in good health and reasonably good shape, thanks to many years of exercising and walking for fun. I started at City Barre because my daughter attends and is very excited about how great it is. She's right!
Your first barre class at City Barre
New to barre? Almost everyone is their first time, and a good studio expects beginners to walk in the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: barre blends small isometric holds and tiny pulses at a ballet barre with light weights and mat work — it's low-impact and joint-friendly, but it works muscles you didn't know you had, so a little shaking in your legs is the point, not a problem. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: fitted leggings and a top you can move in — nothing baggy, so the instructor can see your form. Grip socks: most barre studios require grip socks — bring a pair or check whether they sell them at the front desk; the grippy soles keep you steady during the pulses. What to bring: water and a small towel. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign in and meet your instructor. It clicks fast — most people say their third class feels completely different from their first.
