Pure Barre is a serious workout for people of all ages and all body types. The instructors are trained to help you, regardless of your limitations. As a senior who has experienced her share of physical decline, I rely on Pure Barre to decrease my stress, to keep my body toned, to improve my balance and to maintain…
First of all, this is the hardest (in a good way) class I've ever taken, except maybe vector calculus. The teachers are all really nice, they make you feel like you can do it even if you're a less than coordinated participant like myself, and the facility is super comfy.
Just finished a couple of classes with our new instructor, Lindsay, who impressed me with her choreography and class management. The timing for each sequence was perfect, and transitions were organic. Both classes were well thought out. Music was also fun.
I just had a total hip replacement and I do Pilates but Pure Barre really targets strengthening of the hip muscles particularly in standing which I need to get back to work as a physical therapist. I also like the added benefits of the Cardio and upper arm strengthening with weights which I am too lazy to do on my own.
Your first barre class at Pure Barre
New to barre? Almost everyone is their first time, and a good studio expects beginners to walk in the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: barre blends small isometric holds and tiny pulses at a ballet barre with light weights and mat work — it's low-impact and joint-friendly, but it works muscles you didn't know you had, so a little shaking in your legs is the point, not a problem. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: fitted leggings and a top you can move in — nothing baggy, so the instructor can see your form. Grip socks: most barre studios require grip socks — bring a pair or check whether they sell them at the front desk; the grippy soles keep you steady during the pulses. What to bring: water and a small towel. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign in and meet your instructor. It clicks fast — most people say their third class feels completely different from their first.
