There are many great yoga studios and excellent teachers in Ithaca, but the elegant athletic “aspiring” vibe (and power flow and barre teaching practices) of this one is just the best fit for me. Yoga for me is first about cultivating virtue...
Blackbird Yoga has been a transforming experience for me. It is a welcoming environment to new visitors and to returners. The instructors make an effort to get to know you and help you as an individual in your practice.
This place is the very BEST in town!! I have visited many studios throughout Ithaca and none compare to Blackbird. It truly is my happy place and I love the community here. The staff is amazing and I feel challenged in every class I take. Blackbird has the most knowledgeable and talented instructors in town.
Your first barre class at Blackbird Studio Yoga Barre and Pilates
New to barre? Almost everyone is their first time, and a good studio expects beginners to walk in the door. Here's what to know. What to expect: barre blends small isometric holds and tiny pulses at a ballet barre with light weights and mat work — it's low-impact and joint-friendly, but it works muscles you didn't know you had, so a little shaking in your legs is the point, not a problem. Rest whenever you need to; no one will bat an eye. What to wear: fitted leggings and a top you can move in — nothing baggy, so the instructor can see your form. Grip socks: most barre studios require grip socks — bring a pair or check whether they sell them at the front desk; the grippy soles keep you steady during the pulses. What to bring: water and a small towel. Arrive 10–15 minutes early to sign in and meet your instructor. It clicks fast — most people say their third class feels completely different from their first.
